Easter Seals Gives Children Limitless Possibilities

The path of  parenthood can be a lonely road when your child is falling behind. Allison’s instincts were telling her that there was a reason why her daughter, Maddie, was not meeting her milestones but no one seemed to take her concerns seriously. After months of Allison insisting something was wrong, Maddie was finally diagnosed with hypotonia, a muscle weakening condition. It was a very stressful time but Easter Seals therapists were able to step in and help provide support and encouragement to the family when they needed it most.

“Maddie was my first child so I felt like a failure as a mother. Other people kept bragging about their kids being ahead. It was tough. I wasn’t even sure if she’d ever walk. I started avoiding people because I was so embarrassed of what other people thought,” Allison says. “When she started walking, thanks to Easter Seals therapies, it was such a weight off our shoulders.”

Two-year-old Maddie is a fun, loving and intelligent child who loves to read, watch cars drive by and find the moon even during the day. She has come so far in her therapy with Easter Seals. At nine months Maddie couldn’t sit up, roll over, eat finger foods and was finicky about things she touched.

With the help of Easter Seals therapies, including, physical, occupational and speech, she sat up at age one, started walking at 21 months and is now able to eat foods with texture. Her first steps were taken on a family trip to Disney World, which made it that much more magical and memorable.

A trusted provider of children’s therapy services for more than 65 years, Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore specializes in treating children ages birth through eighteen years with a variety of challenges.

“I would tell other parents to try and focus on what is best for your child. It must have been so frustrating for Maddie too. She couldn’t walk or play the same games since she couldn’t touch things,” Allison says. “Now I think about positive things, things we all take for granted, like what she will be when she grows up. Thanks to Easter Seals for giving her the opportunities they gave her. Her possibilities are limitless!”
